Newbridge is a small, quiet hamlet, there are no manufactories whatsoever and only two or three small collieries" (Levels). So wrote the editor of Salter's Directory in 1859, around 150 years ago. Read more in our history section.

HelpCan anyone help with this new latest request from Australia, posted on the Newbridge-Online Forum New on 07/08/2011 please help

Hi I'm following Marianne's lead and asking for help with family tree research. I'm trying to find the family of Jack Meredith born around 1921/2. I have a copy if his marriage certificate from 1943 in Surrey, which shows that his father was a witness to the marriage, his name was George Henry Meredith who lived in Newbridge, and he was miner. I'm trying to help my sister in law with her family tree and any help would be much appreciated. Pauline

Local shop goes Online....

After decades of trading and supplying the community with DIY, pet supplies and gardening products from their high street shop, Knights DIY are moving with the times and going online to compliment their very successful Abercarn business.

The site is currently being stocked but already has over 400 items and supplies to trade and the public alike. If you have DIY task coming up, check out the tools section now as there will be something there that will make that job much easier. You can even buy gift vouchers online.
Whilst this family run business and shop is run by his father, Ian, Connor Hopkins is going to manage the online presence of the store and says;

"the shop has been a key outlet in the town for many years and will be around for many more years to come continuing to offer expert advice and that personnel service, however, to be able to match the larger corporate DIY stores in terms of available products and service to our customers, we need to go online to supplement the excellent service the shop offers and to offer our customers a much larger array of supplies, tools and services. However big the shop is, its never big enough to put on show everything we have to offer, by putting it online we can create the biggest selection of products in an infinite way and expand to all of the UK ."

He went onto say;

"Although the customer can now buy online and have products delivered direct to their house, the shop, advice and personnel service is still there and just a telephone call away."

How the Pensions Bill will affect you (January 2011)

A couple walking and smiling at each other.

Bad news for people now in their late forties who have started planning for their retirement and factored in the state pension into their plans. These changes brought in by the new coalition government and undermining the original plans of the previous government will take out of the pot of women planning on retirement at 60 in the region of £30,000.

We all agree the pension age should increase, but is this another of the "to much to quick policy". This will only affect the poorer people and it is wrong to affect the age group who have already planned for their retirement, people in their late forties and fifties, or the people who can't work until they are 66 due to ill health or those who become unemployable. Can you afford to lose £30,000?

Now's the time to complain and put your case forward, contact your MP now at: http://www.parliament.uk/biographies/chris-evans/84900 and also leave your comments on your Community Forum

On 13 January 2011 the Government's new Pensions Bill received its first reading in Parliament. Here's a quick guide to what's been said, and what these changes could mean for you.

An increase in the State Pension Age

The first key reform in this Bill is the increase in the State Pension Age. The State Pension Age is different from, and not linked to the Default Retirement Age - it is the age at which eligible people begin to receive their state pensions.

How the changes will be brought through

Under the current rules, the State Pension Age for women is in the process of rising from 60 to 65 to equalise with men; and then state pension age for both men and women was due to increase from 65 to 66 between 2024 and 2026. The Pensions Bill is bringing forward the timing of equalisation and the rise in the State Pension Age from 65 to 66 for both men and women.

  • Under the new legislation, women's state pension age will reach 65 by November 2018.
  • The rise from 65 for both men and women will begin in December 2018 and reach 66 by April 2020.

Concern over those on lower incomes

Age UK is concerned that this change will hit the poorest hardest, as people on lower incomes are generally more reliant on their state pensions and have lower life expectancy.

Auto-enrolment

Better news is the new provisions about auto-enrolment. For the first time, all workers will have the right to a pension contribution from their employer unless they decide to opt out of the scheme. The new Government reviewed these plans and the Pensions Bill introduces some changes.

Age UK is pleased that most of the provisions remain - for example, there will be no exemption for small firms, who will have to pay pension contributions for their employees. The Bill provides for an optional waiting period of up to three months before the employee is automatically enrolled.

Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director of Age UK, commented:

'Auto-enrolment is a hugely important reform which means that for the first time, all workers will have the right to a pension contribution from their employer unless they decide to opt out of the scheme. While we have some concerns about the increase in the threshold and the introduction of a waiting period, we are pleased that there will be no exemption for small firms.'

What happens now

Age UK will be working to ensure that the Government invests in providing good-quality information and advice to help people understand the new pensions options available to them and make informed decisions about saving for retirement. We believe that January 13's announcement brings both good and bad news for people in later life:

  • phasing out the Default Retirement Age is good for those that want to continue working past 65,
  • but plans to increase the State Pension Age more rapidly than previously planned is bad news for the millions of older people unable to work for longer.

A regeneration of Newbridge, has been announced.

Along with Bedlinog, Treharris and Trelewis who will also benefit from initiatives made possible with funding from Europe and the assembly government. The regeneration was unveiled by Business and Budget Minister Jane Hutt, Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration Jocelyn Davies, and Merthyr council leader Jeff Edwards.

Ms Davies said: "Improving the environment in which people live and work will increase the economic potential of the area, attracting investment and stimulating employment opportunities.

It would also "build community pride," she said.

The master plan unveiled for Newbridge will act as the framework for developing the town and includes ideas put forward by residents who want to see the streets cleaned up and better public transport services.

Councillor Ron Davies said: "We have consulted the community and the feedback has been very positive, so I would like to thank everyone who is helping to shape the future of their town."NRS

The regeneration work is due to begin this year and be completed by 2015.

Caerphilly Council has already secured £3.7m in EU funding and grants from the assembly government for various projects in Newbridge, including the "Calzaghe Bridge".

The remainder is to be spent on "public realm works".

The club is run by local volunteers every Tuesday between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, and is open to everyone over the age of eight. There are a range of activities for young people to get involved in. Already there are up to 20 young people each week, but more are welcome to attend.

Regular patrols of the Pantside area have continued throughout the last month as part of police efforts to tackle anti-social behavior. Letters have been sent to the parents of anyone that we have seen taking part in anti-social behavior to explain why they were spoken to by officers and the consequences of any further incidents of anti-social behavior. During a recent one-day operation, police also carried out a number of drugs warrants at properties throughout Risca, and a man was arrested for burglary. In total there were 24 arrests on the day across the Caerphilly county borough.
